JEN Ta-Hsien

Jen Ta-Hsien received his MFA from the Graduate Institute of Plastic Arts at Tainan National University of the Arts in 2010. Creating mainly sculptures, he also specializes in metal and stone carving and uses mixed media in his works. Jen has been a resident artist in Taitung, Tainan, Kaohsiung, Hualien, Hungary, and Boston, USA, etc. He makes new friends through residence programs, and the exchanges between artists help stimulate his future works.

Jen expresses inner feelings through his sculptures and thinks that our imaginary senses of time and space are different from those in real life. For sculpture, space exists, and existence is also space. In the changes derived from basic forms such as triangles, circles, and squares, we seek a balance between simplicity and complexity. The "Gray Level" series projects lines and the areas they form into the work, emphasizing the unconscious depictions in life so that the creation can be either simple or complicated.

In terms of material, rocks can only be dealt with in linear ways--what's cut away cannot be restored, unlike metals, which can be added and reduced. Different media have their unique characteristics, and each time Jen creates, he finds materials that best suit how he wants to express his feelings.
