LEE Chao-Chang

Lee Chao-Chang favors stillness over movement. For him, a prolonged period of stillness is followed by movement, and that's why he embraces each artist-in-residence, and the journey, culture, and exchanges that come along. Lee sees each residency as a "movement," where all things come to a halt after the audience leaves, and the memories settle to form a story.

With memories come a story; with stories comes a book. In Lee's bookstore, there are only a handful of books from over the last 20 years. In the bookstore, patrons come and go, over and over again. They may like your inadvertences. Come and read in Lee's "bookstore" that has no regular business hours.

As a student, Lee loved traveling. Having left school, artist-in-residence satisfies his yearning for visiting foreign countries. He picks up materials and tools on-site for his works, similar to a backpacker cooking in someone else's kitchen, where one spends more time and harder to show off culinary skills. But the fridge you're unfamiliar with might help you break your routine and give you surprising dishes. Such is the kind of challenges Lee enjoys--be on the lookout, be querying, curious, flexible, and humble. The results of a residency are the dishes on the table. It's about sharing, and having gratitude for those who share with you.
