LIU Chih-Hung

Born in Hsinchu, Taiwan, Liu received his M.F.A from the Department of Fine Arts at Taipei National University of the Arts. He lives and works in Taipei currently. Incorporating images, ready-made objects, investigation reports, and printed materials, his multimedia work attempts to address issues related to the use of ordinary materials, the notion of formal language, and the creation of local connections.

“Sound Geography” is a publication consisting of a “voice-drawing” database. Using the “human body” as an auditory organ to perceive various sounds and voices, this project aims to explore the possibility of visualizing what we hear by connecting, transforming, and representing verbal accounts, interviews, images, and abstract/figurative sketch lines. The materials in the series exhibited here were collected from Taoyuan. Liu made sketches to illustrate his surroundings and sensory connections. He also used a computer to map the waves of the sounds he captured, then turned into hand-made pottery by using locally-sourced sand and soil. In essence, Liu transformed abstract sound waves into visible and tangible pottery objects.

For Liu, each artist-in-residence is like the long journey of a migratory bird flying to different cities and stopping at strange midway posts, where he receives nutrients for future works. It's just as his mind stays extra clear when he runs or rides, when the body's senses work non-stop with the sceneries passing by. That's when Liu gets to focus more on his creations, when he returns to the start with internalized experiences. After all, one always comes back to where they began to face the most fundamental issues in their practices.
