PENG ii

Born in Pingtung in 1983, Peng ii graduated with an MFA from Tunghai University's Department of Fine Arts. In recent years, he has focused on traditional media and techniques, particularly the research and uses of "rammed earth." Peng tries to come up with untraditional applications that fit modern lifestyles.

Peng emphasizes the extension of traditions, and that requires making adjustments to the times. Houses in the agricultural era expanded horizontally, without the need to go high. Therefore, all rammed earth was attached to the ground. In contrast, buildings today rise vertically, which means rammed earth needs to be modified to fit into high-rises or risk becoming a thing of the past. With the help of modern technology, objects made of Peng's form of rammed earth can be lifted and moved off the ground. Rammed earth has entered the modern age.

The most intriguing part of artist-in-residence, for Peng, is going through the unknown. Oftentimes, he has absolutely no idea what to do with a new studio, to which he's just got the key and locked himself inside. "I shall go out," Peng would say to himself, then walks pass next-door artists nonchalantly. When eye contacts occur, he would put on a smile, nod, and walk faster. "Off to the streets, maybe!" And gradually he gets used to those once unfamiliar streets.
