TSENG Shu-Ling
Ceramicist Tseng Shu-ling's various residencies in Japan, Korea, Australia, and Spain have come to shape her personal styles. Her works express care for humanity, people, natural environment, as well as convey aesthetics that reflect human nature. Tseng uses different media together and to the fullest, while showing their complementary possibilities, and attempts to convey her praise of life through creations using ceramics and mixed media.
The "Fertile Land" series embodies the message that, like soil, life teems with humic substances, which provide creative inspirations. The rich life that grows out of a fertile soil thrives and reproduces in countless beautiful ways. Clay-made ceramics used in the "Slash and Burn" series shows natural glaze formed from wood ashes from the kiln. The color of fire is baked onto the surface by flames. The green saplings are symbols of new life and hope for the future.
Tseng believes interactions with resident artists help broaden one's horizon, enrich concepts, and foster the innovation and renovation of techniques. Artists get to seek novel and interesting creative ideas, and through literature review, experimentation, and styling creation, art practitioners get to accumulate their creative energy from exposure to different cultures while traveling. Any sensational input during artists' sojourns turn into their motivations. These new experiences also propel them to examine their various journeys in life.
